Hardcover. xvii, 404p., illustrated with numerous b&w photographs (of as many buildings as people), hardbound first edition in textured black buckram boards, panelled in blind and lettered gilt, t.e.g. (top edge gilded). A sumptuous if somewhat clumsy production, reminiscent of engineering textbooks of the period, but does the job of commemorating this fabulously wealthy builder / investor who indeed sent very large amounts of money overseas - to Palestine especially of course, but to a dozen different countries. Book's casing is edgeworn at spine rims & corner-tips, front & rear covers are dusted with a white something brushed up against, we have been able to remove most but not all of it. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. "Forty Years of Struggle for a Principle" is an insightful and personal account of the evolution of Orthodox Judaism in the United States during a pivotal era. Authored by the esteemed Rabbi Herbert S. Goldstein, this work documents the tireless efforts to maintain traditional Jewish values and practices amidst the rapid social changes of the early 20th century. Goldstein, a central figure in the American rabbinate and a leader in the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, provides a detailed narrative of his mission to bridge the gap between ancient faith and modern American life. The book explores essential themes of community building, religious education, and the founding of institutional frameworks that would sustain Jewish identity for future generations. It offers a unique window into the growth of the Institutional Synagogue and the broader movements that shaped contemporary Orthodoxy in an urban setting. For scholars of religious history and readers interested in the development of the American Jewish experience, "Forty Years of Struggle for a Principle" serves as both a historical testament and a profound reflection on the enduring power of conviction. This work remains a significant contribution to the understanding of how faith adapts and perseveres in the face of modern cultural transformation. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
