Cet article occupe les pages 161-166; il est illustré de 5 figures. Les… auteurs avaient une formation à la fois de clinicien et d'anatomo-pathologiste. Albert Gombault (1844-1904), ancien assistant et préparateur de Charcot, était médecin des hôpitaux de Paris et chef de service à l'hospice d'Ivry. Claude Philippe (1865-1903) était alors son interne ; il deviendra chef du laboratoire d'anatomie pathologique de la Salpêtrière. Gombault et Philippe avaient déjà publié en 1894 leur "Contribution à l'étude des lésions systématisées dans les faisceaux blancs de la moelle épinière". Ils étudient ici successivement les fibres radiculaires, exogènes et les fibres intrinsèques, endogènes (à l'aide de la méthode de Flechsig, de la méthode histologique de Golgi ou de Golgi-Cajal et de la méthode des dégénérations secondaires basée sur la loi de Waller). A propos des fibres intrinsèques, ils écrivent : "qu'elle soit médiane ou latérale, il est à présumer que la sclérose [névroglique] reconnaît pour cause la dégénération de fibres commissurales courtes à trajet descendant, fibres commissurales qui constitueraient un seul et même système. Ce système de fibres commissurales serait représenté dans le cône terminal par un faisceau médian ayant la forme d'un triangle dont la base atteint la surface de la moelle ; au niveau du renflement lombaire, ce faisceau deviendrait le centre ovale de Flechsig" Ce triangle prendra le nom de triangle de Gombault et Philippe. L'intérêt clinique de la connaissance de l'agencement des fibres des cordons postérieurs est ensuite exposé.
