Cuthbert Goodridge MacDonald (1897-1967) was a member of one of the preeminent families of Canadian poetry and literature. He published a number of poetry collections, writing poetry primarily in a nineteenth-century romantic style. Thematically,…much of his poetry was inspired by the natural world, particularly that of Atlantic Canada, where he was born. Some of his poetry was also inspired by his experiences in the First World War, in which he served from 1917-1918 with the Queen's Field Ambulance, Canadian Expeditionary Force. He also served as editor of The Montreal Herald. Selected Poems was published posthumously in 1970, and includes poems that had no previously been published. Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. 1-11 pages, some uncut. Very good condition, with some chipping along the edges of the front cover. Some remnants of erased pencil on the front fly leaf and staining from a previous price sticker on the back cover. Beggar Makes Music, a collection of poetry by Goodridge MacDonald,…part of The Ryerson Poetry Chap-Books series. MacDonald was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, in 1897 and died in 1967. After a stint in the civil service, and serving in the Medical Corps of the Canadian Army, MacDonald became a freelance writer. He would go on to work for the Montreal Herald, including as an Associate Editor. This volume is number one hundred and thirty-eight of three hundred copies that were produced. The Ryerson Poetry Chap-Book series was edited by Lorne Pierce, and intended as a vehicle for promoting and developing Canadian poetry, beyond that of the Confederation Poets, who to that time had been considered representative of Canadian poetry. Two hundred separate titles were produced, featuring the poetry of one hundred and forty-four different authors. The binding was kept simple, with the focus being on the quality of the poetry and not the ostentation of the presentation. The cover of the majority of the editions, including this one, features a woodcut originally by Group of Seven Member J.E.H. MacDonald, and letter refreshed by his son Thoreau in 1942. The scene was intended to invoke the Canadian landscape, including with various provincial flowers in the foreground.
