Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Grant, Gordon (illustratore). 1st Edition. Hardcover 1st revised and expanded edition. Book is clean and tight with only a couple stamps on endpapers, interior fine. Dust jacket is a little frayed, but still present. Songs of American Sailormen was first published in 1924 under the title Roll and Go: Songs of American Sailormen, by Bobbs-Merrill, with illustrations and music notation throughout. A substantially revised and enlarged edition was published in 1938 by W.W. Norton, and it is this version that has become the standard reference. It runs to 212 pages and includes unaccompanied melodic scores alongside the lyrics, making it useful both as a text for reading and as a practical resource for singing. The book's scope reflects a precise understanding of how song functioned aboard a working sailing vessel. Colcord organizes the material by the type of labour each song accompanied, a distinction that matters because the relationship between work and music on a square-rigged ship was not incidental but structural. Different tasks demanded different rhythms, and the shanty was the mechanism by which the coordinated effort of many bodies was synchronized to a single pulse. Short-drag shanties ? among them Haul Away Joe, Haul on the Bowline, and Paddy Doyle ? were songs for short, sharp pulls requiring a single concentrated burst of effort. The shantyman would sing a line, and on one syllable of the chorus the whole crew would heave together. Halyard shanties, used for the sustained heavy labour of raising sails, allowed for more elaborate verses and a longer rhythmic pattern; this category includes some of the most recognizable titles in the tradition, among them Boney, Blow the Man Down, and What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor. Capstan and windlass shanties accompanied the slow, repetitive, circular work of raising anchor, a task that could last hours; Shenandoah, Rio Grande, Stormalong, and Sally Brown all fall here, as does A-Roving. A separate section covers forecastle songs ? sung not at work but during leisure hours in the sailors' own quarters ? a different tradition in character and content, including ballads, comic songs, and pieces with roots in broader Anglo-American folk tradition such as High Barbaree, The Flying Cloud, and The Golden Vanity. Throughout, Colcord provides not only words and music but running commentary on the origins and variants of individual songs, noting British, Irish, African American, and Caribbean influences within what she frames as a distinctly American tradition. She draws attention to the contributions of Black sailors ? from the American South and the Caribbean ? to the rhythmic and melodic character of several of the most widely known shanties, a dimension of the tradition that other collectors of the period were inclined to understate or overlook. The book remains, by the consensus of maritime folklore scholars, the foundational text in its field ? comprehensive in coverage, reliable in scholarship, and written from a position of lived authority that no later compiler has been in a position to replicate.
