Based on the 1966 novel by Roderick Thorp, about a brooding detective who becomes embroiled in a case that uncovers a deep vein of police corruption within the department. Frank Sinatra's fourth collaboration with director Gordon Douglas, a box office success. One of the first mainstream Hollywood films to include explicit depictions of the lives of gay men, including the violence suffered by the gay community due to the indifference of the police. In 1979 Thorp wrote a sequel to "The Detective," entitled "Nothing Lasts Forever," adapted in 1988 as "Die Hard."
