Thompson was a Canadian songwriter and music publisher who began writing mainly religious songs to finance his studies at the University of Toronto. In 1912 with his… March National and Song National, with words by Martha Pugh (found here on p. 1), he turned to patriotic themes. This proved to be a financially rewarding field during the first years of World War I when the Canadian demand for wartime songs could be filled without US competition. In 1918 Thompson founded the Authors and Composers Association of Canada to protect the rights of songwriters.
