Hardcover. Condizione: Good. (1935), 316pp, illustrated with photographs. Moderate wear and soiling, there are one inch hairline splits at the top and bottom of the outer hinges, else G+. Monaghan 2504: "A narrative account by a Hodgenville newspaper man, based on extended interviews with one of Lincoln's boyhood playmates." [Austin Gollaher]. Gollaher claimed to have saved Lincoln from drowning in Knob Creek (then in Hardin County, now in Larue County, Kentucky) when Lincoln was eight years old. The story is generally accepted today by most Lincoln scholars because Lincoln, himself, allegedly related the incident to a visitor to the White House, Dr. Jesse Rodman, of Hodgenville, Kentucky. Lincoln's law partner, William Herndon, also includes the story in his biography of Lincoln. See Coleman, BIBLIOGRAPHY OF KENTUCKY HISTORY, 439.

This book delves into the formative years of Abraham Lincoln, offering a unique perspective on the iconic figure's childhood amidst the rugged landscapes of Kentucky. Through the recollections of Austin Gollaher, a lifelong friend and neighbor, we are transported to a time of pioneer life, where young Abe's character and intellect began to take shape. The author meticulously reconstructs the world of Lincoln's early days, painting vivid pictures of life in the wilderness, encounters with nature, and the bonds of friendship forged in a close-knit community. The narrative explores the challenges and triumphs of frontier existence, highlighting the values of hard work, resilience, and a thirst for knowledge that would later define Lincoln's path. Beyond mere anecdotes, this book delves into the thematic depths of Lincoln's development, exploring his innate curiosity, his evolving sense of justice, and the profound impact of his surroundings on his worldview. We witness the seeds of greatness being sown in the heart and mind of a young boy, shaped by the experiences and relationships that would forever mark his journey. By offering a glimpse into the lesser-known years of Abraham Lincoln, this book provides invaluable insights into the making of a legend, revealing the foundational experiences that shaped one of history's most revered figures. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
