Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Alvarado, Don (illustratore). Fine condition blue linen boards with gold front cover and spine lettering. Includes Author Dedication; About Henry Gray; Preface; List of American Editions of Gray's Anatomy; References; Biographical Index; and Subject Index. Illustrated with 1182 drawings, mostly in color. 1969, 28th edition. "The changes in this edition are probably as extensive as those that have been made in any edition since 1887, when W.W. Keen amplified and improved the current English edition, and the publishers added color to some of the illustrations. In the present edition the entire book has been reset with new type in a two-column format. Every page has been rewritten to a greater or lesser extent with the result that this edition is more than a revision of the preceding one; it is practically a new book. It has given the editor an opportunity to make sure that the new Nomina Anotomica has been adopted throughout. In addition, suitable occasion was provided to replace many archaic and ambiguous terms such as "over" and "under", "above" and "below," or "in front of" and "behind" with more precise terms of directions such as "ventral" and "dorsal," "Superficial" and "deep," and "cranial" and "caudal." A diagram illustrating these terms has been placed in a new introductory chapter for ready reference. A fortunate circumstance has made it possible for us to have the artist, Don Alvarado, as a contributor. He has made a number of new drawings and has adapted others from recent publications. He has redrawn a number of the illustrations which needed changes in their labels to correspond to the new nomenclature. In doing this he has retained the flavor of the style in Van Dyke Carter's drawings for the first edition, but he has added a modern freshness and clarity which improve the Carter touch. His drawings for the pictorial initial letters appearing at the beginning of each chapter have introduced a special neatness into this genre of illustration. Henry Gray designed the book particularly for the benefit of students and the same intention has been uppermost in my mind in making the present revision. Where the material has been completely rearranged, as in the chapters on veins and lymphatics, the changes have been prompted by repeated expressions from students of a desire to have these parts less difficult to follow." - short excerpt from the Preface by Charles Mayo Goss.
