This book explores the time taken for nervous impulses to travel across the spinal cord of a frog by applying electrical impulses to the mixed nerve of the animal's sciatic limb and recording the resultant electrical response in its gastrocnemius muscle. The author performed a series of experiments, both on normal and strychnine-injected spinal cords, to determine this 'reflex transmission time'. The author found that this time can vary depending on a number of factors, including the strength of the applied stimulus, the temperature of the preparation, and the drugs used. The author builds upon the work of Wundt and provides evidence refuting Wundt's premise that a submaximal stimulus to a motor nerve results in fewer fibers being stimulated. The author concludes that the 'reflex transmission time' of a normal spinal cord is typically in the range of 140-210 thousandths of a second and that this is determined by the time taken for the impulse to traverse the synapses between the sensory and motor neurons in the cord. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
