Biographie "à la portée de tous" (p.6) de Louis Hubert Gonzalve Lyautey (1854-1934), Chef d'Etat-Major des troupes d'Indochine en 1894 sous les ordres du Général Gallieni, qu'il suit à Madagascar lorsque ce dernier est nommé Résident Général. Commandant la région d'Aïn Sefra en Algérie en 1903, il est promu Général en 1906 et placé à la tête de la division d'Oran. Nommé Résident Général au Maroc en 1912, membre de l'Académie française la même année, il est ministre de la Guerre de décembre 1916 à avril 1917 puis repart au Maroc. Elevé au rang de Maréchal de France en 1921, il est écarté du Maroc pendant la Guerre du Rif, en 1925, après avoir développé une politique coloniale marquée par une tentative de promotion d'un développement culturel proprement marocain. DÉDICACÉ PAR L'AUTEUR à la page de garde à un "cher ami", avec son "affectueux souvenir". Henri Gouraud (1867-1946), sorti de Saint-Cyr, part en 1894 au Soudan (actuel Mali). En septembre 1898, Capitaine, il arrête le chef mandingue Samory Touré qui, à la tête d'un Empire et de nombreuses forces armées, s'opposait à la colonisation française depuis plus d'un décennie. Il devient dés lors une célébrité fêtée dans le tout-Paris colonial. Grâce à l'actif soutien de "parti colonial" et de son chef Eugène Etienne, il mène une belle carrière en Afrique. En 1907, il est promu Colonel et Commissaire du Gouvernement général en Mauritanie, où il prend l'initiative de lancer une Campagne contre les guerriers qui menacent la sécurité des transports, favorisant ainsi la constitution du vaste empire colonial en Afrique occidentale. En 1911, il part combattre au Maroc où, devenu Général de Brigade, il est chargé du commandement de la région de Fez. En 1914, il est nommé à la tête des troupes du Maroc occidental. Lorsque la guerre éclate, il est à la tête de la 4ème Brigade Marocaine envoyée en France. Nommé Général de Division, il reçoit en septembre le commandement de la 10ème Division d'Infanterie. En 1915, il commande le Corps d'Armée colonial puis le Corps expéditionnaire français aux Dardanelles, où il est grièvement blessé par un obus, ce qui nécessite l'amputation de son bras droit. Fin 1915, il commande la IVème Armée en Champagne. En 1916, il remplace Lyautey au Maroc mais revient en France en juin 1917 à la tête de la IVème Armée et lance en septembre 1918 la contre-offensive victorieuse. En 1919, il est nommé Haut-Commissaire en Syrie et en Cilicie et Commandant en Chef de l'Armée du Levant. Rentré à Paris en 1923, il devient membre du Conseil Supérieur de la Guerre et Gouverneur militaire de Paris, fonction qu'il exerce jusqu'en 1937. Maroc / Guerre 14-18 / Première Guerre mondiale. Paris, no date, circa 1925. Slight creasing in the top margin, but still very good condition. French General who was one of the leading figures in the history of French Colonization, having distinguished himself in the French Sudan, Mauritania, Chad and Morocco. During World War 1, Gouraud distinguished himself in Argonne (where he lost an arm), the Dardanelles and Champagne. In 1923 he became the Military Governor of Paris.
