Als einer der wichtigsten Regisseure der DEFA hatte er von 1970 bis 1991 zehn große Spielfilme inszeniert, danach fand er für seine Stoffe keine Produzenten mehr - eine schmerzliche Leerstelle im gesamtdeutschen Kino.Nach seiner Lehrtätigkeit an der Filmhochschule Babelsberg tauschte Gräf die Filmkamera gegen eine Fotokamera aus. Zwischen 2007 und 2015 entstand dabei ein ganz subjektives Panorama seiner Brandenburger Wahlheimat: Bilder aus dem Fläming. Landschaften, Leute, Strukturen - Bilder aus tiefer Provinz und vielleicht trotzdem ein Blick auf die Welt. Vor allem aber auch ein Blick auf sich selbst - Fotos zur Selbstvergewisserung und Texte (u.a. von Helga Schütz), die Ansichten und Befindlichkeiten ostdeutscher Filmemacher nach der Wiedervereinigung reflektieren.
