Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Clean, tight, unmarked; very minimal wear; appears unread; In 1936 Graham Rowley went to the still-unexplored west coast of Baffin Island as the archaeologist for a small British expedition - the last in the Canadian North that depended on traditional techniques. Cold Comfort, his acclaimed memoir of this period, captures the way of life in the North before WWII, including the experience of travelling by dogsled over unexplored land. This new edition includes the beginning of Rowley's planned sequel covering his post-war experiences in the Arctic. Three chapters describe Operation Musk-Ox, the first military exercise to show that it was feasible to manoeuvre in the Arctic even in winter and Rowley's work for the Canadian Defence Research Board. An afterword by Susan Rowley and John Bennett expands on Rowley's ongoing involvement in the rapid change that took place from the Cold War to the establishment of Nunavut. …

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. First English Edition. "At the age of 34 Bernhard Hantzsch left Dresden in July, 1909, with the material support of several German scientific groups to explore the west coast of Baffin Island. He had already carried out summer zoological expeditions to Iceland and Ungava Bay, and knew something of the conditions he was likely to encounter. He planned to rely on the help of the Eskimos and to travel with them from Cumberland Sound across Baffin Island to Foxe Basin, north and west to Fury and Hecla Strait, and then on to Pond Inlet. Although these journeys had all been made by Eskimos, the country was completely unknown to white men. Hantzsch's account describes in great detail how he achieved part of his objective, the difficulties he encountered, and the sickness that caused his death on the coast of Foxe Basin, near the mouth of the river that now bears his name." - Foreword. pp. xxii, 396. Bibliography, Eskimo Glossary, General Index, Natural History Index. Text in English, translated from the German. Pristine 25"x19" two-colour map entitled "Bernhard Adolf Hantzsch's Journey 1910-1911 A Map" stored in pocket inside back board. Remnant of small address label atop front free endpaper otherwise book tight, clean and unmarked with moderate wear. Average wear to dust jacket now preserved in glossy new archival-grade Brodart. A quality copy of this extraordinary account.; Mawdsley Memoir Series #3; Map; 4to. Illustrated by Kupsch, W.O.; Rowley, G.W. (illustratore).…
