Petit in-8, 4 feuilllets, 79 pages (les 10 dernières mal chiffrées 80 à 89). Ex-libris contrecollé "Petri Le Verdier". Vélin de l'époque (premier plat taché). Edition originale d'une rareté légendaire. Cet exquis canard a été l'objet de nombreuses et longues controverses. A l'époque de Graindorge, l'opinion commune, et ce depuis plusieurs siècles, était que les macreuses, oiseaux qui ont la particularité de courir sur les vagues, naissaient des coquilles ou étaient produites par du bois pourri dérivant sur les flots. André Graindorge, docteur de Montpellier qui exerça la médecine à Caen, est né et mort à Caen (1616-1676) et ami du célèbre Huet. Dans ce traité, il réfute vigoureusement les absurdités qui avaient cours sur l'origine des macreuses. À cause des bizarres croyances se rattachant à leur origine, les macreuses passaient pour viande maigre, et étaient donc consommables durant le carême. Le poète Du Bartas s'en fait l'écho dans sa "Création du Monde": "Ainsi le viel fragment d'une barque se change En des canards volants, ô changement étrange Même corps fut jadis arbre verd, puis vaisseau Naguère champignon et maintenant oyseau ! " Pour contrer cette croyance, le pape Innocent III émit une défense expresse qui plaçait la chair de la macreuse parmi les viandes défendues, mais rien n'y fit, et l'on continua jusqu'au XIXe siècle de consommer les macreuses en carême, ainsi que les bernaches, foulques et autres sarcelles. Précieux exemplaire en vélin du temps ayant appartenu à Pierre Le Verdier (1854 - 1935), président de l'Académie des sciences, belles-lettres et arts de Rouen, de la Société de l'histoire de Normandie (1913-1935), de la Société des bibliophiles normands, maire de Belmesnil. Après 35 ans comme avocat spécialiste en droit social, il consacre sa retraite à l'écriture.
