Das Buch erscheint nicht von ungefähr zu einem Zeitpunkt, zu dem die Neue Rechte gerade versucht, mit ihrer Heimattümelei die Epoche der Romantik für ihre Zwecke zu instrumentalisieren.Von den frühesten Anfängen des Opiumanbaus und seiner medizinischen Verwendung schlägt es einen Bogen zur Kolonialgeschichte und seiner Bedeutung für die romantische Literatur. Ergebnis: Von Taylor Coleridge, der mit acht Jahren zum ersten Mal Opium als Medizin verabreicht bekam und später ungeheure Mengen konsumiert haben muss, bis zu Arthur Rimbaud und Charles Baudelaire war Opium sehr viel weiter verbreitet als wir uns heute vorstellen können.Spätestens mit dem 1821 erschienen Buch von Thomas de Quincey, «Confessions of an English Opium-Eater», wurde Opium im Zusammenhang mit Kreativität und Literatur offen thematisiert. Vorurteile, Klischees, Macht und Profit beherrschen den Umgang mit den Drogen bis heute; die Verbindung von Bewusstsein, Aufklärung, Gesundheit, Lust, Rausch passten wie zu fast allen Zeiten den Mächtigen nicht ins KonzeptWarum haben sich fast alle (heute noch) bedeutenden Dichter des 19. Jahrhunderts auf Opium eingelassen Motive gab es ja genug: Außenseiterdasein, Geltungstrieb, das Unvermögen sich anzupassen, Flucht in Traumwelten, Suche nach gegenweltlicher Erfahrungen, «neue Innerlichkeit», Todessehnsucht, Spielertrieb, Revoluzzermythos, Ohnmachtsgefühle. Doch wie konnte das Opium zu einem festen Bestandteil einer antibürgerlichen, intellektuellen «Massenbewegung» in der Literatur werden Deutsch.
