Large 8vo, publisher's original brown morocco over diced cloth covered boards, the corners and turnovers gilt decorated at the joins, the spine with raised bands gilt ruled and stopped, gilt lettered i…n two compartments. iv, 538 pp. [The Speke Address to the RGS 5 pp.] A very good copy, some rubbing to the extremities, the binding strong, the text-block clean. FIRST EDITION OF THIS SCARCE ADDRESS AND PORTRAIT. In the years 1863 and 1864 Speke published, respectively, JOURNAL OF THE DISCOVERY OF THE SOURCE OF THE NILE and, WHAT LED TO THE DISCOVERY OF THE SOURCE OF THE NILE. Despite the confusing titles, the "Journal" actually covers his second expedition, with James Grant, while "What Led To" narrates his first journey in the company of Burton. After an expedition into eastern Africa in the company of Sir Richard Burton, Speke returned to England to announce his hypothesis that the Nile issued from Lake Victoria Nyanza. However, his fellow geographers, including Burton, were skeptical of this claim. Under the sponsorship of Sir Roderick Murchison, President of the Royal Geographical Society, Speke went back to Africa and Lake Victoria Nyanza, and when he returned home he claimed that this time he had found conclusive evidence that the lake was indeed the source of the great river. This work is an account of that expedition. It details his day-by-day adventures in his search for the source of the Nile, including myriad accounts of experiences such as his enjoyment of courtly life in the native palace in Uganda and, of course, expeditions of big game hunting. But he never lost sight of "the problem [he] went to solve," and returned with what he claimed was conclusive proof that the Nile issued from Lake Victoria Nyanza. For his work, he was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Geographic Society.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Published by Linnean Society Volume XXIX, 1875, Folio, Contemporary half calf gilt, 190 pp.; with folding coloured lithographic map, 136 plates of African flora by Walter Hood Fitch. In the introduction, Grant notes that in 1860, when appointed to accompany Speke to the sources of t…he Nile, ".it occurred to me that many a pleasant hour might be spent in collecting plants and seeds while traversing the country to be explored. I purchased some drying-paper and a couple of books for notes. Captain Speke thought it far too cumbrous for such a journey, but readily yielded to my wish to have it. He afterwards saw with me how the plants were appreciated when we took them to Kew upon our return. Would that my poor friend had survived to see the present result!" These plates, produced from 'actual specimens', are the work of the prominent botanical illustrator Walter Hood Fitch and show 'either new species or such as had never been figured abroad or at home, the object being to present what was of the greatest interest to the botanist' (Introduction p.7).
