Hardcover. Condizione: Good +. First American Edition. vii, [1], 328 p.; 19 cm. Red cloth with gilt-stamped spine and cover titles. First published in 1916 by William Heinemann, London. Stamped on the front endpapers by the Little Art Shop, Ocean City, N.J., with a note of sale on the front fixed endpaper. Richard Dehan was the pseudonym used by Anglo-Irish playwright and novelist Clotilde Graves (1863-1932), known as Clo Graves. As the daughter of Majory William Henry Graves of the 18th Royal Irish Regiment, she was familiar with miliary life, which is reflected in several of the stories in this collection of short stories. As an adult, Graves studied art and worked at the British Museum galleries, which probably informed the character of the Scottish artist known as the MacWaugh, who appears in several other stories. Contents: Earth to Earth -- Life and the MacWaugh --Society and the MacWaugh -- A Nursery Tea -- The Self-denial of the MacWaugh -- The Rising Generation -- The Young Man from "The Shop" -- The Rout of the Royal MacTurks -- Taken in War --A Sin of the Intention -- "Lilium Peccatorum" -- The Maynards' Dance -- The Infamy of the MacWaugh -- Thinner than Water -- The Half Loaf -- A Royal Betrothal -- The Curse of the MacWaugh -- On the Honeymoon -- The Idiocy of the MacWaugh -- The Crucial Test -- The Power and the Glory -- The Mission of Selina -- The MacWaugh and Fame -- The Hare. In Good+ Condition: tail of spine starting to fray; cover lightly soiled; back hinge weak; minor foxing; otherwise, clean and solid.

Meggan Kehrli (illustratore). Dublin: Swan River Press:, 2021. First edition, Hardcover, Limited, New in dust jacket, 189 pp. Cover artwork by: Meggan Kehrli This edition limited to 350 copies. "Clotilde Graves was known for challenging convention. In her early years, she was known as the dramatist "Clo Graves", but became better known under her fiction-writing persona, 'Richard Dehan'. She transgressed contemporary gender norms by dressing in male attire, wearing her hair short, and smoking in public. This border crossing can be seen also in her work, which encompasses a wide variety of forms and modes. And while she wrote relatively few fantastical stories, she was devoted to tales of lingering revenants, mysterious cryptids, and grotesque sciences-often laced with her sardonic sense of humour. This volume seeks to recover this side of Graves's writing by including stories from across her career, which challenge definition and range across the speculative genres."
