"The art of the Punjab Hill State of Garhwal is an entrancing parallel to that of Kangra. Developing in the last quarter of the eighteenth century, it exhibits the same preoccupation with courtly needs, the same delicate refinements and the same blending of poetry and romance. The work of its greatest master represents perhaps the highest level of poetic expression reached in eighteenth-century. Indian painting. In this monograph, Mr. W. G. Archer, Keeper of the Indian Section, Victoria and Albert Museum, discusses the problems posed by its sudden development and suggests the circumstances which may have prompted certain artists to settle in the State. He relates their work to earlier painting and stresses the supreme part played by the anonymous master. to colour plates illustrate some of the finest Garhwal pictures one of which (plate 5) was described in 1948 as the loveliest Indian painting ever to be shown in London.'" Slight crimping to the front of the jacket where the illustration has been pasted on. Book and unclipped jacket otherwise in excellent condition with no inscriptions. The dust jacket is in an easily removable clear plastic protector. From 'The Faber Gallery of Oriental Art' series.

Neave-Hill; Dr Hugh Shire; Professor William Watson.; Exhibition catalogue to celebrate the Jubilee Year of the Oriental Ceramic Society, London limited to Chinese Ceramics, covering the whole field from Neolithic times down to the Ch'ing dynasty. The Committee divided the area of its selection into four sections chronologically but, when appropriate, overlapping so as to follow through each major ware across the dynastic boundaries. The four sections demarcated cover the following periods: (a) from neolithic to the T'ang and Liao dynasties; (b) Sung and Yuan dynasties; (c) Yuan and Ming dynasties; and (d) Ch'ing dynasty. The overlapping is particularly noticeable in the two middle sections. In Section (b), the Yuan wares which follow the Sung tradition, such as the celadons, are included; while in Section (c) the Yuan wares included are the shu fu, blue and white and allied wares of Ching-tê Chên, which form the basis of most of the Ming porcelains.
