Leather. Condizione: Very Good. A fantastic collection of newspaper clippings of poetic and literary parodies from the latter part of the nineteenth century. Two half morocco scrapbook volumes filled with newspaper clippings of parodies and humorous poems. In total, there are 269 clippings across these two volumes: 154 to volume I, and 115 to volume II.The parodies in these volumes date between 1880 and 1884, with a significant number hand dated in ink by a prior owner. Two loosely inserted leaves provide a handwritten index of the subjects of the clippings present in these two volumes. The final leaf of the index is signed 'James Gray', indicating he was responsible for creating this scrapbook. The first collection of parodies in volume I involve retellings of Hamlet's most famous soliloquy. Thirteen clippings present parodies of 'To be or not to be', with contributions from William Garbutt, 'T.C.', John Gilbert, John Rowell Waller, R. Irving, J. S. Burrows and others.Parodies present also include: Herbert Buckley's parody of 'Bridge of Sighs' and Tennyson's 'Six Hundred'; a Shakespearian parody from Eozoon Canadense; parodies of Longfellow's 'Psalm of Life' by J.P., Philip, and an anonymous American; a poem titled 'Tory War Song'; parodies of nursery rhymes such as 'She Wore a Ring of Roses' and 'The House that Jack Built', and even parodies of Biblical scripture. Some clipping additionally feature discussion of the nature of parody itself. In half morocco bindings, with cloth covered boards. Small loss of leather to head of volume I back strip, with two small holes of leather to centre of rear joint. Light rubbing to volume II back strip head. Head of front joint of volume I starting, with board firmly held. Ink inscription to front pastedown of volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean, with the odd light handling mark. Clippings lightly age toned. A number of clippings neatly dated in ink to tail, with page numbers in ink.
