Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. Dudley Gray (Photography) and Sheldon Gaylin (Auth (illustratore). Presumed First Edition, First printing. vi, [2], 344 pages. Signed and dated by previous owner on fep. The dust jacket is price-clipped and in a plastic sleeve. This extraordinary account of Selective Service violators who chose jail rather than deferment or exile is based on Dr. Gaylin's two-year research project intended originally as a scientific study. Willard Marvin Gaylin (February 23, 1925 December 30, 2022) was an American bioethicist and physician who served as a clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. He was also the co-founder, along with Daniel Callahan, of The Hastings Center, an independent research institute focused on bioethics. Gaylin served as the president of the Hastings Center from its inception, in 1969, until 1993 and as chairman of the board from 1993 to 1994. He was a member of the Center's board. From the dust jacket: Using psychoanalytic techniques he interviewed twenty-six white and black imprisoned war resisters to determine who they were, why they went to prison, and what effect it had on them. Of these interviews, which were taped to preserve an undistorted record, Dr. Gaylin writes: "When I started the project . I had no idea of publishing a book for the general reader. My interest was purely intellectual, not emotional. But then I had not met these young men. I had not seen the walls of a prison, I had not measured their brevity of time in which youth can be lost and hope abandoned. I came as an observer and left as a participant." Vietnam War resisters were individuals who opposed U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War (19651975) by refusing the military draft, deserting, or protesting while in uniform. Methods included claiming conscientious objector status, burning draft cards, fleeing to Canada, or going to prison, with resistance peaking due to moral objections and the war's high toll. The Draft and Conscientious Objectors: Between 1965 and 1970, many young men faced the decision to fight or resist. Thousands of draft resisters refused induction, while others sought legal, yet often denied, conscientious objector status. "The Resistance" Movement: Formed in 1967 by figures like David Harris, this group encouraged direct, public refusal to cooperate with the Selective Service System, aiming to clog the courts and prisons. Thousands of "draft dodgers" or deserters fled to Canada to avoid serving, often settling permanently. Resistance also grew within the military, including desertions, combat refusals, and the "fragging" (attacking) of officers. Veterans also protested, famously throwing medals at the U.S. Capitol. Resisters organized anti-war activities, including publishing underground newspapers and forming anti-war coffeehouses near military bases. Organizations like the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and the War Resisters League (WRL) provided legal advice, counseling, and support for those resisting the draft. War Resisters League (WRL) was one of the organizers of the first U.S. demonstration against the Vietnam War in 1963. The resistance to the Vietnam War was significant, reflecting deep divisions in American society and contributing to the anti-war movement.
