Negli ultimi anni le tecniche di scansione laser hanno avuto grande diffusione in diversi ambiti del rilevamento metrico, da quello architettonico e dei beni culturali a quello del territorio. I ricercatori hanno potuto avvalersi di una vasta gamma di strumenti, con diversi livelli di prestazione, che hanno consentito di rilevare sia oggetti di piccole dimensioni da piccole distanze con precisioni molto elevate, sia vasti complessi architettonici o porzioni di territorio, con strumentazione a terra o da aereo, a livelli di dettaglio paragonabili o superiori a quelli raggiungibili con tecniche mature, come la fotogrammetria. La possibilità di raccogliere e di elaborare in tempi brevissimi enormi quantità di dati ha profondamente modificato la filosofia stessa del rilevamento metrico, che era basata sulla pratica di un numero relativamente piccolo di misure estremamente accurate e richiedeva tempi lunghi e notevole perizia. Data la relativa facilità con la quale odiernamente è possibile agire, si corre il rischio, quando ci si affida in modo superficiale a software preconfezionati, che a questo diverso atteggiamento possa corrispondere una perdita di controllo da parte dell'operatore sui singoli dati e sulle diverse fasi dell'elaborazione. Infatti non è possibile ottenere risultati di elevata qualità senza essere consapevoli dei principi e delle procedure di calcolo che stanno alla base delle diverse fasi di elaborazione. Buona parte di queste nuove problematiche erano già mature e sono emerse a Firenze, in occasione della giornata di studio svoltasi il 20 ottobre 2006 sui "Sistemi a scansione per l'Architettura e il Territorio", il cui seminario era stato strutturato in modo da far corrispondere la successione dei contributi alla sequenza delle fasi operative di un rilievo con sistemi a scansione. In quell'occasione sono state esaminate le problematiche inerenti all'acquisizione, al filtraggio e alla decimazione delle nuvole di punti, alle procedure interpolative per la costruzione delle superfici, alla definizione di un sistema di riferimento unico, ai metodi di classificazione tematica, ma anche sono state presentate applicazioni al rilievo dei Beni Culturali e del Territorio, richiamando i principi precedentemente illustrati e rivolgendo particolare attenzione agli aspetti metodologici. Il presente volume raccoglie i contribuiti di coloro che sono intervenuti nella giornata di studi; si propone di fornire lo stato dell'arte con l'auspicio di risultare un utile riferimento per quanti si accostano all'impiego di tali tecnologie innovative, ma anche fornisce interessanti aperture critiche per il futuro. Jerusalem is situated in a highly seismic zone, and in the past has been the theatre of disastrous earthquakes. One of these was the 1927 quake, which seriously damaged the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre. A study of the city of Jerusalem has revealed a cyclical pattern of repeated seismic events, every 100 years or so. The desire to avert a danger, foretold in advance, lay behind the project described in this volume. In 2006 the three Major Communities of the Holy Sepulchre invited a research team from Florence University. Architects, surveyors, geologists and structural engineers conducted the investigations, in a highly interdisciplinary collaboration. It was an extraordinary opportunity to draw up a complete survey, using new technology.
