Published in 1962 by Duke University Press. A scarce theoretical statement by the American abstract painter and founding member of American Abstract Artists. Greene examines the tension between individual freedom and social organization, moving from the Enlightenment and nationalism through communism, fascism, and modern mass society to the particular predicament of the contemporary artist. An unusually substantive piece of writing by an important participant in the development of American abstraction, documenting Greene not simply as painter but as artist-intellectual engaged with the political and philosophical implications of modernism.
