Preliminary talks with the PLO by the United States to determine if it was ready to negotiate peace with Israel was recommended by the Seven Springs Center of Mount Kisco, N.Y., a private study group. THE GROUPâS report followed a four-member mission to the Middle East, which included Philip Klutznick, former president of the World Jewish Congress and Bânai Bârith who served in the Carter Cabinet as Secretary of Commerce. Others on the junket, which visited four Middle East capitals, were Joseph N. Greene, Jr., president of the Center; Harold H. Saunders, asst. Secretary of State for Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs in the Carter Administration and long regarded as the top Mid. East expert in government; and Merle Thorpe, Jr., president of the Foundation for Middle East Peace, a Washington organization dedicated to bringing Arabs and Jews together in search of settlement. Referring to a 1975 promise by the United States to Israel that it would not recognize or negotiate with the PLO until it accepted Israelâs right to exist.

"Lowland Maya sculpture, which underwent spectacular developments during the first millennium AD, constitures one of the great art styles of ancient America. Complexities of style, degrees of wethering, and problems of effective field photography make many of the Maya monuments difficult to appreciate or study in satisfactory detail. The intricate carving of the magnificent sarcophagus from the Tomb of the Inscriptions at Palenque is a case in point. The photographs of the sarcophagus sculptures are inevitable cramped, limited by the conditions within the tomb chamber; Merle Greene, however, working long hours in ankle-deep water dripping from above, made rubbings of these sculptures which are remarkably free of distortion." from the foreword by Robert L. Rands. Unpaginated. foreword, acknowledgments, Introduction and notes by J. Eric S. Thompson; 60 b&w Rubbings by Merle Greene with notes on facing pages; suggested readings, map, imprint.
