The book was released during a period of significant clinical interest in halothane, an inhalation anesthetic that was widely adopted for its non-flammable nature and rapid induction but later faced scrutiny regarding "halothane hepatitis".Nicholas Greene, a pioneer in anesthesiology and the founding chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at Yale University, compiled this volume to examine the pharmacology and clinical application of the drug. He was also well-known for his other major work, Physiology of Spinal Anesthesia." From the author's 2005 obituary: "Nicholas M. Greene, M.D., who has been described as one of the founding fathers of modern anesthesiology around the country and at Yale, died December 28 at age 82 in New Haven. Founder of the Department of Anesthesiology at Yale School of Medicine, Greene was also professor of anesthesiology at Yale and on the Yale-New Haven Hospital staff for 32 years. He served as chair and director of the department for 18 years. During his distinguished career, Greene served 26 years as editor and then editor- in-chief of the journals Anesthesiology, and Anesthesia and Analgesia, the two major journals in the specialty in North America.
