Shown are the political boundaries and geographical features as they were known in the 1840's. Guiana is divided into the three European colonies along the coast, but the vast, unknown interior is simply labeled Guiana, making it a no-man's-land. The Lost World and it's dinosaurs were somewhere in the vastness. Much of that region is now part of Brazil. The most isolated part of Brazil is called Solimoens. Part of what is now Venezuela is labeled Colombia. This map comes from the era of political instability as Spain's South American colonies were establishing their independent governments and political boundaries. Not dated in the plate, this map is from Greenleaf's 1842 atlas. *** A clear, clean impression with bright colors, a few ares of light foxing. The verso is blank. Original 1/2 leather with cloth, disbound. Partially perished morocco label on front, leather spine and corners worn and rubbed. Internally very good, with one map (Missouri) loose and frayed at edges. 65 fully colored maps directly descended from David Burr's Universal Atlas, though including scarce maps of Texas and Wisconsin/Iowa which were not in Burr's atlases. The Texas map is from the Republic period while the Wisconsin/Iowa map shows only a small number of organized counties in the east of each territory. Another interesting feature of the Iowa/Wisconsin map is that Chicago is not shown, though Calumet is. Chicago appears on the second state of this map in the 1842 issue of this atlas. Iowa extends north to the Canadian border. The map of Mexico also includes Texas. Phillips (Atlas) 784 (1842 edition.) This edition not in Rumsey, whose copy does not include the Wisconsin/Iowa map but otherwise hs the same collation.

Folio (14 4/8 x 12 inches). Engraved title-page, Contents leaf, and 65 engraved maps, all with original hand-colour in full (some spotting to text leaves, one or two pale stains). Original half calf, brown cloth, red morocco lettering-piece on the front cover (worn and stained). First published in 1840, based on David H. Burr's "Universal Atlas" of 1836. This atlas contains the rare fine large-scale map of Texas "Texas Compiled from the Latest and Best Authorities". Greenleaf's map is an early map to show the individual counties, each colored. Two other maps in the atlas are of Texas interest: "North America", shows Texas as an independent republic; as does "The United States of Mexico". Streeter very famously did not include this atlas in his collection because: "Examples of atlas maps not separately published, and so not included, are Texas from the Latest Authorities, scale about seventy miles to the inch, found in the 1842 Greenleaf Atlas" (Streeter, Texas, volume III, page 330). Other maps of interest include the four hemispheres of the world, a "Map of the Country Twenty-Five Miles Round the City of New York", which is also circular; and "New Holland and New Zealand";.Day, Maps of Texas, p. 22.
