» (: P 31-32). 1 vol. 12mo (190 x 115 mm) of: [2] ff.; xj, 108 pp. (foxing). Modern Bradel binding covered with green paper, red morocco title, untrimmed, publisher's cover preserved. Rare copy of the original French edition of this tragic account of a shipwreck written by Major Duncan MacGregor (17871881) and translated from English by Baron Auguste-Louis de Staël-Holstein (17901827), eldest son of Germaine de Staël. On February 28, 1825, the Kent, a ship belonging to the English East India Company, encountered a violent storm in the Bay of Biscay. The ship, which had left England nine days earlier bound for Bengal, was carrying more than 650 people, including around 100 women and children. During the storm, a violent fire broke out on board. The fire spread extremely quickly throughout the ship and threatened to reach the powder magazine. The English brig Cambria, alerted by the Kent's distress flag, managed to approach the ship. Despite the transfer operations, made dramatic by the storm, there were many casualties. MacGregor's account contains some poignant scenes: "While it is comforting for humanity to know that no women.
