Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. Written by 6th century Pope St. Gregory I, this text is one of the only ancient accounts of St. Benedict's life and work. St. Gregory first introduces the life of Benedict with information about his birthplace in Italy, his parentage, and his primary education. St. Gregory tells us that at an early age, St. Benedict abandoned all worldly cares to seek a life of close union with God. In his adulthood, St. Benedict built twelve monasteries and was believed to have performed numerous miracles. St. Benedict is largely known for his book The Rule of St. Benedict, a collection of spiritual and administrative instructions for monks--as a result of this achievement, St. Benedict is often recognized as the founder of Western monasticism. The second half of St. Gregory's text is the reproduction of St. Benedict's seventy-three chapter Rule. Although St. Gregory never engaged with St. Benedict himself, he was able to craft this illuminating portrait of St. Benedict's life by consulting several of St. Benedict's close disciples and successors. Saint Zacharias (born, San Severino, duchy of Benevento [Italy] died March 14/22, 752, Rome; feast day March 15) was the pope from 741 to 752. The last of the Greek popes, Zacharias was supposedly a Roman deacon when he succeeded Pope St. Gregory III in November/December 741. Antonio Bortoli (fl. c. 1691-1794) was a printer and publisher based in Venice. Thought Bortoli published in Italian and several other languages, for much of the 18th century, he and his descendants held a monopoly, granted by the Venetian Senate, on Armenien and Greek language publications in the city, primarily targeted at the colonies of Greek and Armenian traders residing there. Many of these works were religious in nature, but Bortoli also published works on history, philosophy, and linguistics (including language primers on Italian grammar). Thomas Hodgkin (1831 1913) was a British historian, biographer, banker, and Quaker minister. Hodgkin's magnum opus, Italy and Her Invaders, was an eight-volume work on the history of the wars in the Late Roman Empire. RAREE1723ENOA - 11/18 COLC1723NEMQ - 12/24 - HKREV332. …
