Verwurzelt in höfischer Musikkultur und protestantischen Traditionen entfaltete sich auch eine vielfältige, landesweite Musikpflege, deren Gipfelpunkt, das Werk von Johann Sebastian Bach, ein Markstein des Weltmusikerbes wurde. Der Autor des repräsentativen Bandes, Prof. FrankHarald Greß, einer der besten Kenner sächsischer Orgeln, arbeitete seit 1994 in enger Abstimmung mit der SilbermannGesellschaft an dieser modernen Gesamtdarstellung. Er vermittelt nicht nur Sachinformationen auf der Grundlage des aktuellen Forschungsstandes, sondern gibt auch interessierten Laien einen anschaulichen Einblick in Persönlichkeit und Schaffensprinzipien Silbermanns sowie in den technischen Aufbau seiner Orgeln. Eingeleitet wird das Buch mit einem Essay von Dr. Joachim Menzhausen über die sächsische Kunst des 18. Jahrhunderts. Ihm folgt eine ausführliche Darstellung des Lebens Gottfried Silbermanns und des Erfolges seiner schon zu Lebzeiten berühmten Orgelwerkstatt.
