James "Jimmy" Maxton (1885-1946) was MP for Glasgow Bridgeton, 1922-46, and Chairman of the Independent Labour Party, 1926-31 and 1934-9; one of the radical "Red Clydesiders" and a passionate pacifist during the First World War, he was a popular parliamentarian with, unusually, a lasting reputation. Alexandra Lothian (née MacCallum, 1885-1978, no obvious relation of Maxton's first wife, "Sissie" née McCallum), Chairman of Edinburgh Central's ILP Branch, was a qualified doctor, and a sometime partner of the pioneering Isabel Venters; Mary Cameron MacCallum (1881-1960) was her younger sister, Christina MacCallum (née Cameron, 1847-1939) their mother; Lothian's Vice-Chairman, Andrew Murray Walls, was the next-door neighbour at Rosebank Cottages, Fountainbridge, of the Treasurer, John Jeffrey Simpson. Since 1918 the MP for Edinburgh Central had been the Peebles-born William Graham (1887-1932), founding secretary in 1908 of the ILP's Selkirk branch - appointed Financial Secretary to the Treasury in the first Labour government of 1924 and President of the Board of Trade in Ramsay MacDonald's 1929 government. He lost his seat in the 1931 general election to James Guy (Scottish Unionist Party) and died of pneumonia two months later. "A grim and threatening spirit haunts the old streets of Edinburgh," Flora Grierson informs James Maxton, born in Pollokshaws outside Glasgow. "The houses on either side, jumbled and overhanging with crooked chimneys and suspicious windows, seem ready to fall and crush the passer-by. The air is a-flutter with the washing that hangs from the pullishees, instruments not unlike gallows put to a new and more innocent use.
