    in-12, frontispice gravé à l'eau-forte par Lalauze-XVIII-256 pp.-12 pp. de catalogue, demi toile marron Réimpression de l'édition originale (Paris, 1705) avec les pièces annexes, et une notice, par A. Poulet-Malassis. Cette Vie de Molière écrite sous la dictée du comédien Baron, ne mérite pas les critiques adressées à son égard par Boileau, Rousseau et Voltaire. Nicéron s'est chargé de réhabiliter l'ouvrage de Grimarest : cet auteur écrit-il a fait de grandes recherches et a fait mieux connaitre Molière qu'il ne l'était auparavant (Lacroix, bibliographie molièresque n° 983)Très bon état.

La première édition de cette biographie devenue classique par défaut de toute autre contemporaine est parisienne et fut donnée cette même année 1705 par Ribou fils ; dès cette date, les contrefaçons, parisiennes ou étrangères, se multiplièrent : c'est le cas de notre édition hollandaise. On ne reviendra pas sur les controverses sur la qualité de l'ouvrage, qui commencèrent dès la publication, avec un jugement très négatif de Boileau ; le biographe le plus récent du dramaturge, Georges Forestier (1951-2024), à la différence de Mongrédien, est d'une sévérité confirmée par les recherches les plus récentes : "Personne n'est moins fiable que Grimarest (.). Il se trompe dans tout".Exemplaire de F. Renard, puis de l'historien du XVIIe siècle et du théâtre Georges Mongrédien (1901-1980), lui-même auteur de plusieurs études sur Molière, avec vignettes ex-libris contrecollées sur les premières gardes.
