It first sets out Freire's own positions on curriculum, then traces how his perspective took shape historically, and finally compares it with other approaches and considers how it applies today. The central historical section covers the curriculum reform in Sao Paulo. It looks at the Workers Party, its intervention in formal schooling, the link between curriculum planning and wider educational reform, and the final texts the reform produced. Throughout, Freire's view is set against traditional, canon-based curricula and against the social-efficiency model of behavioral objectives, which treats learners as passive and curriculum as a neutral technical matter.
