About the book >.>.> In addition to making exhibitions devoted to the work of a single artist, Tate Gallery Liverpool has presented a series of group exhibi…tions in which a number of artists are introduced to a wider public. Until now the theme underlying such exhibitions has tended to be geographical, and we have made exhibitions of artists from Cologne, the North of Britain, Ireland, Japan, and Korea. The present exhibition has no such basis, given that the artists repre-sented work in Britain, Ireland, Germany, France and Canada. What brings them together is an act of selection which proposes that their work stimulates comparisons. Elective Affinities has been selected by Penelope Curtis to focus on the con-nections between the viewer's physical and mental identification with the forms and subjects of recent art. It takes its title from Goethe's novel about inevitable attraction, and similarly sets up the question as to what extent we are free of our own physical impulses. We are most grateful to all the artists for their commitmen.
