Pershing, several of whom went on to become important figures in World War II.World War I had a profound impact on the United States of America, which was forced to 'grow' an army almost overnight. The day the United States declared war on Germany, the US Army was only the 17th largest in the world, ranking behind Portugal - the Regular Army had only 128,00 troops, backed up by the National Guard with some 182,000 troops. By the end of the war it had grown to 3,700,000, with slightly more than half that number in Europe.Until the United States did so, no country in all history had tried to deploy a 2-million-man force 3,000 miles from its own borders, a force led by American Expeditionary Forces Commander-in-Chief General John J. Pershing. This was America's first truly modern war and rising from its ranks was a new generation of leaders who would control the fate of the United States armed forces during the interwar period and into World War II. This book reveals the history of the key leaders working for and with John J. Pershing during this tumultuous period, including George S. Patton (tank commander and future commander of the US Third Army during World War II); Douglas MacArthur (42nd Division commander and future General of the Army) and Harry S. Truman (artillery battery commander and future President of the United States). Edited by Major General David T. Zabecki (US Army, Retired) and Colonel Douglas V. Mastriano (US Army, Retired), this fascinating title comprises chapters on individual leaders from subject experts across the US, including faculty members of the US Army War College.

From the publisher: "The Harmon Memorial Lecture is the oldest and longest-running lecture series at the United States Air Force Academy, occurring continuously on an annual basis since the spring of 1959Âbefore this institution had even graduated its first class. It is a fitting tribute to the man many consider to be the Â"fatherÂ" of the Air Force Academy, its first superintendent, Lt Gen Hubert R. Harmon. General Harmon understood that the serious study of military history was an essential element of the military profession, and he was a strong supporter of the two main goals of the series: stimulating Â"cadets to develop a lifelong interest in the history of the military professionÂ" and promoting the development and dissemination of military history for the benefit of all American citizens. Each year, the AcademyÂ's Department of History selects a leading military historian to present the Harmon Memorial Lecture to all cadets enrolled in the military history courses offered that term. For many years, these lectures were printed and disseminated individually across the Academy, the Air Force, and throughout academia. In 1988, Lt Col Harry Borowski, then a faculty member in the Department of History, edited a volume containing the first 30 years of Harmon Lectures. This volume picks up where Lieutenant Colonel Borowski left off, presenting the next 30 years of Harmon Lectures for the benefit of cadets, faculty and staff, the Air Force, scholars throughout academia, and all persons interested in military history throughout the world. Each of these volumes includes the work and wisdom of the finest military historians of their eras; the contributors represent a veritable Hall of Fame of military historians from 1959 to 2017 General Harmon understood that military history served a special purpose for those in the American military professionÂencouraging a warrior ethos, developing a deeper understanding of the profession of arms, and providing the context so absolutely essential for those entrusted with the security of the American Republic. IÂ'm confident that readers from a wide variety of backgrounds will agree that this volume fully supports its intended purpose." 6.75" wide by 9.5" tall. Full title: The Harmon Memorial Lectures in Military History, 1988-2017: A Collection of the Second Thirty (31-60) Harmon Lectures Given at the United States Air Force Academy.". First Edition. Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This 2007 book provides the most comprehensive examination of American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) combat doctrine and methods ever published. It shows how AEF combat units actually fought on the Western Front in World War I. It describes how four AEF divisions (the 1st, 2nd, 26th, and 77th) planned and conducted their battles and how they adapted their doctrine, tactics, and other operational methods during the war. General John Pershing and other AEF leaders promulgated an inadequate prewar doctrine, with only minor modification, as the official doctrine of the AEF. Many early American attacks suffered from these unrealistic ideas that retained too much faith in the infantry rifleman on the modern battlefield. However, many AEF divisions adjusted their doctrine and operational methods as they fought, preparing more comprehensive attack plans, employing flexible infantry formations, and maximizing firepower to seize limited objectives.
