Da Meier Hirsch bloß die Resultate giebt, und nirgen…ds zeigt, wie man dazu gelangt., habe ich die Rechnung nicht allein ausführlich mitgetheilt, sondern sie auch durch mancherlei Kunstgriffe sehr zu vereinfachen gesucht (Vorrede). - Meier Hirsch (1765 od. 1770-1851) war als Privatlehrer der Mathematik in Berlin tätig; u. a. unterrichtete er Wilhelm u. Alexander von Humboldt (vgl. ADB 12, S. 467 f.). - Johann Philipp Gruson (1768-1857) erfand 1790 eine Rechenmaschine; 1794 ging er nach Berlin u. wurde Professor für Mathematik im Kadettenkorps an der Bauakademie, später an der Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität u. am dortigen Collège Français (ADB 10, S. 65 f.). - Bibl.-Etik. abgesplittert, verspannte Deckelinnenfalze gelöchert. Der Buchblock selbst einwandfrei fest und gut erhalten.

Japanpapier etw. stabilisiert u. ergänzt. - Euler, (1707 - 1783), wurde durch seine Bücher, die sich alle durch große Klarheit und möglichste Einfachheit auszeichnen und die ersten eigentlichen Lehrbü…cher im modernen Sinn darstellen, zum Lehrer Europas bis weit ins 19.Jahrhundert. Abgesehen von der durchgängigen Analytisierung (Mathematisierung) der Naturwissenschaften verdanken Euler viele Zweige der Mathematik ihre Begründung und/oder Ausformung: Die Variationsrechnung, die Theorie der unendlichen Reihen, der gewöhnlichen und partiellen Differentialgleichungen sowie der mehrfachen Integrale, die Zahlentheorie (die sich vor ihm lediglich auf die Behandlung einiger spezieller Probleme beschränkt hatte) und die kombinatorische Topologie. Sein gewaltiges Opus ist auch heute noch nicht vollständig im Druck zugänglich, und eine "definitive" Werkbiographie steht noch aus; eine solche wäre allerdings fast gleichbedeutend mit einer Universalgeschichte der mathematischen Wissenschaften des 18.Jahrhunderts. (DBE) - Gruson, (1768 - 1857), entstammte einer 1689 in Magdeburg, Magdeburg-Neustadt und Sudenburg angesiedelten hugenottischen Familie. 1790 erfand er während seiner Tätigkeit bei der preußischen Kriegs- und Domänenkammer in Magdeburg eine Rechenmaschine. Er ging 1794 nach Berlin und war Professor für Mathematik im Kadettenkorps, an der Bauakademie und später an der Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität. Im Jahre 1817 nahm er die Stelle des Mathematikers am dortigen Collège Français an, wo er bis zu seiner Verabschiedung 1833 tätig war. Gruson veröffentlichte Logarithmentafeln, trigonometrische Tafeln und Währungsumrechnungstabellen, er erfand Rechenstäbe für die vier Grundrechenarten und reformierte den Mathematikunterricht. Für seine einflussreichen, in deutscher und französischer Sprache verfassten wissenschaftlichen und populärwissenschaftlichen Werke erhielt er den Roten Adlerorden. (Zitat).
