Während im Jahr 1993 das Volumen bei etwa USD 200 Milliarden lag, vervierfachte es sich in den darauffolgenden 10 Jahren. Das Wachstum scheint grenzenlos zu sein, denn im Jahr 2008 sollen Hedge Fonds weltweit etwa USD 1.700 Milliarden verwalten. So stellen sich immer mehr Anleger die Frage, ob sie einen Teil des Kapitals in Hedge Fonds investieren sollten. Sogar Bundesfinanzminister Hans Eichel hat durch das Investmentmodernisierungsgesetz den Vertrieb von Hedge Fonds in Deutschland seit Januar 2004 genehmigt und dadurch die bis dahin herrschende vertriebs- und steuerrechtliche Benachteiligung von Hedge Fonds abgeschafft.Die Experten sind in zwei Lager gespalten. Die Befürworter verweisen auf das sehr attraktive Rendite-Risiko-Verhältnis und die Diversifikationsmöglichkeiten, weil Hedge Fonds Renditen nicht oder nur wenig korreliert zu Renditen von traditionellen Anlageklassen sind.
