Dynamical Methods in Soil and Rock Mechanics was the subject of a seminar held at the University of Karlsruhe in Germany on September 5-16, 1977. As the material submitted and discussed in the seminar covers a rather wide field, the Proceedings are published in three volumes. Vol 1 is Dynamic Response and Wave Propagation in Soils and Vol 2 (this book) is Plastic and Long-Term Effects in Soils, and Rock Dynamics and Geophysical Aspects is the Third Volume. The subject of this second volume can be roughly defined as follows. Consider an earth body with an embedded structure. The earth body can be a natural soil deposit, a dam, or a fill. Examples of structures are conventional slab or pile foundations, off-share platforms, or nuclear power plants. This system may be subjected to transient and/or cyclic loads. The loads can either attack the earth body by earthquake, blasting, or by vibrating machines such as wind, water waves, or shock impact. If the system is not purely elastic, such loads will leave behind changes of forces and displacements of the structure relative to the earth body. These alterations can be called plastic if they are permanent. Plastic alterations can be noticeable either due to relatively high loads or by accumulation of the remnants of many cycles of moderate loads. The latter case is a long-term effect. Other long-term changes of relative forces and displacements are possible and can join the plastic effects. This mechanical definition covers many effects well known in foundation engineering.
