Elizabeth, la femme sans homme, titre superbe et redoutable. Superbe par son rayonnement puisque affiché dans tous les pays du monde, redoutable par son éclat même. En effet, par l'importance qu'il prit, il éclipsa presque le nom de son auteur ; il éclipsa ensuite ceux de ses autres ?uvres. C'est l'injustice qui s'attache à certains triomphes. Charpentier disait que pendant 60 ans, il avait traîné sa Louise comme un boulet. La Louise d'André Josset s'appela Elizabeth. Elle fut connue du monde entier mais cette orgueilleuse autocrate ne permit plus à aucun personnage de rivaliser avec elle, encore moins de prendre sa place. André Josset en fut conscient et il en souffrit peut-être plus qu'un autre qui lui, se serait accommodé d'un triomphe, car il n'était pas homme à s'endormir sur ses lauriers. Sa passion permanente resta d'écrire. Il écrivit inlassablement, toujours aiguillonné par le démon exigeant de la création, toujours entraîné par une imagination débordante. Heureux homme ! Cet ouvrage a été publié à l'occasion de l'exposition « À la rencontre d'un auteur dramatique : André Josset, 1897-1976 » organisée à la suite de la remise d'un ensemble de documents et présentée par la Bibliothèque Nationale sur le site de l'Arsenal, du 24 octobre au 18 novembre 1979.
