Aggiungi al carrelloHardback. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. 1838. First edition. A two-colour title page (possibly the original paper cover), half-title, vignette title page, plain title page, xi, 271pp. and 120 engraved illustrations, including the vignette title page. The publication of Walter Scott's Waverley novels inspired a great interest in Scotland from readers in Europe in the early 19th century. This is a French publication, with the text in French on double-column pages, and acts as a guide to Scotland with particular reference to the sites mentioned in Scott's novels. The title roughly translates as "Picturesque Traveller's Guide to Scotland, Adorned with 120 Views Representing the Principal Buildings, the Natural Curiosities, the Remarkable Castles, and all the Places Mentioned by Walter Scott. By the authors of the Picturesque Guide for Travelers in France". The book is bound in contemporary or possibly original green paper covered boards with a green leather spine and gold titling and designs on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some expected shelf wear and some soiling and light staining on the boards. There is wear to the paper covering the corner tips and scuffing to the leather on the spine that has caused some loss of colour and the spine is faded. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few marks from finger smudges, etc., and scattered foxing. The foxing is mostly light although the first and last few pages, including the plain title page, a few other pages are more heavily affected. The half-title page is fairly heavily foxed. The foxing also affects some of the plates. all plates are present but some of the plates are not bound in the position indicated at the end of the book. Page xi has been incorrectly bound in between the vignette title page and plain title page. There is no inscription. PLEASE NOTE: Due to the value of the book we will only send recorded delivery so we may ask for a little extra for shipping.
