Elke dag dringen nieuwe uitvindingen op vlak van de media door in de samenleving. Dit boek analyseert hoe een buitenlandse technische uitvinding, met name het medium film, een eeuw…geleden (1894-1908) in Belgie een eigen structuur, het bioscoopwezen, heeft kunnen ontwikkelen. Hiervoor wordt een sociaal-culturele invalshoek gehanteerd, die de filmexploitant maatschappelijk situeert en de filmvertoning in een culturele context plaatst. In een eerste deel staan de eerste Belgische ondernemers-industrielen centraal, die Edisons kinetoscoop, Lumieres cinematograaf en Gautiers zoograaf voor de eeuwwisseling hebben gecommercialiseerd. Niet zij, maar voornamelijk binnen- en buitenlandse variete- en kermisartiesten, blijken succesvol. In een tweede deel (1898-1908) wordt nagegaan of deze tot de eerste ontwikkelingsfasen van het bioscoopwezen behoren: van de kermistent naar de variete-zaal. In het afsluitende gedeelte (1905-1908) komen de eerste bioscoophouders aan bod met hun affiniteiten in de variete- en kermiswereld, in de internationale zakenwereld, en in het cafe- en brouwerijwezen, hetgeen het bestaan van de talrijke cafe-cines verklaart. Een koninklijk besluit (1908) regelt de vestiging van bioscopen en is een impliciete erkenning van de nieuwe structuur. 0 g.
