Although this is widely recognized, reactions to it have varied considerably both in Africa and in the Western world. There has been little agreement, though often dogmatic assertion, about what tribe and tribalism mean in the affairs of those countries and in the lives of individuals; and there has been too little recognition that these phenomena are not merely aspects of the older, indigenous African life and culture. As this book shows, they are also essentially modern in their operation and significance, taking on new forms and representing strictly contemporary features of change, conflict, and co~operation in community life. In the first part of the book, continued and changing tribal loyalties and tribal groupings are examined in the general contexts of politics, economics, language, law, and education, together with a comparative look at European nationalism. In the second part, regional and case studies discuss particular examples of tribe and tribalism in both rural and urban areas, together with accounts of Somalia and Buganda. The contributors, whose names are listed on the back of the jacket, are specialists in anthropology, history, law, linguistics, and sociology, and one is a leading African statesman.
