Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In this book, the focus is on media ownership of the news media and the effects this might have on news media reporting. We will focus on two relatively recent historical events relevant to what is here described as 'democratic practice,' i.e. the actual state of a functioning democracy. These events, Watergate and Iran-Contra, are used as test cases to detect possible variations in reporting on the part of the corporate news media in the United States, including ABC news, NBC news, and CBS news. It is often suggested that media consolidation and monopolization has had an adverse effect on the news medias ability to be objective, and or to represent democratic structures presupposed in pluralist notions of a demcoratic society. As we will see, the ability of the news media to function as a watch dog for the public has been seriously compromised, consistent with recent notions of a monopolizing media. This book deals with the consequences of this during political crises in the United States. 224 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - What if the Soviet Union was never truly communist Contra Communism challenges the conventional narrative and unveils the political and historical realities behind Russia's transformation from imperial rule to totalitarian absolutism. A powerful read for anyone seeking to understand the ideology, illusion, and legacy of Soviet power. To understand the political and historical processes taking place in Russia from the mid-nineteenth century until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, we must first understand the deeper phenomena behind them.Communism is often associated with the ideology of the Soviet Union. Yet, as this book reveals, the Soviet Union was never truly a communist system. Instead, it was a manifestation of totalitarian absolutism.Russia was a backward country-but the extent of this backwardness is often overlooked. While Western Europe had already moved beyond absolutism, Russia was only just implementing it.In Western Europe, absolutism had been authoritarian; in Russia, it became totalitarian. This paradox meant that as democratic processes advanced in the West, Russian absolutism grew even less democratic. Within Russia, there could exist no true opposition capable of questioning the presence or legitimacy of communism or socialism.Contra Communism explores this historical and political paradox in depth, shedding light on the unique path that led Russia from imperial rule to the rigid structures of Soviet absolutism.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Historical Sociology on the Paradoxes of News Media This book deals with political crises and how to understand them in historical contexts. Through comparisons of two ground-breaking events in American political history, the book deals with how to understand all comparable events through a particular sociological lens. The author presents a method to understand two political crises; Watergate and Iran-Contra, and then shows us how we can use comparative sociology to untangle similar crises in the past and crises to come. As democratic systems have progressed, political crises are presented by the news media. 384 pp. Englisch.
