Den Hauptteil bildet eine Einführung in die Lagerstättenkunde, in der nicht nur die wichtigsten Lagerstättentypen vorgestellt, sondern auch die grundlegenden Prozesse erklärt werden, die zu einer Anreicherung der jeweiligen Metalle geführt haben. Wie am besten nach Lagerstätten gesucht wird, wie der Bergbau abläuft und wie aus dem Erz Metalle gewonnen werden, sind weitere Themen des Buches. Schließlich gehen die Autoren auch auf wirtschaftliche Aspekte ein wie die Entwicklung von Rohstoffpreisen und die Faktoren, die einen Abbau profitabel machen.
