Walter Guppy (1918 - ) moved with his parents to Tofino in the 1920s. Sooner or later, over his 80 years, he met all the surviving players, or their peers, of the post-pioneer era. He lays heavy emphasis on economic and industrial events and presents a highly significant list of Clayoquot-Tofino-Ucluelet residents from the 1918 and 1955 British Columbia Directory. Among the best features of the history is its impressive album of photographs of Clayoquot people, landscapes, boats and settlements from about 1900 to 1990, offering an intimate look at the homesteads, classrooms, fishermen and schoolchildren that have comprised the Clayoquot communities.

On the Pacific side of Vancouver Island is a town called Tofino. It is the business and cultural center of an area known as the Clayoquot Sound. These 80 pages - with INDEX - describe the area's history since approx. 1861. Learn more about : Opitsaht, Maureen Fraser, Franc Joubin's mining interests, Grice Bay, and logging proposals for Meares Island. B/W photographs and maps assist text. Cond: Paper wrapper is white with (red and) brown lettering. Front cover photograph shows a native welcome in 1928 for a visiting Lady Willingdon. That is inset on a hydrographic survey map of the region. Very light wear. No names, marks, creases, nor tears. Excellent reference ! Quote (p. 30) : " The fact that the country was now at war of course made matters more difficult. Although the outbreak of the Second World War didn't have the immediate impact on mining development such as had been the case with the first one, it did inhibit investment in mining ventures to a considerable extent.
