Der Dialog galt lange, zumal manchen Philologen, als reine Komödie, ohne jeden philosophischen Gehalt. Abgesehen von einigen oberflächlichen Charakterisierungen des Sophisten schienen die verschiedensten Quellen durchzuschimmern mit Ausnahme von Platon selbst und von Protagoras, dem der Dialog gilt. Von philosophischer Seite pflegt der Dialog ernster genommen zu werden, zum mindesten als Zeugnis früher platonischer Problematik, besonders schön in Platos dialektischer Ethik von H.-G. Gadamer. Es darf erlaubt sein, anhand einiger Beispiele die Frage neu zu überdenken, ob Platon die Lehre des Protagoras ernstlich, im Hinblick auf eine philosophische Überzeugung hin, prüft oder ob es ihm darum geht, einen allgemein gezeichneten Vertreter der Sophistik mit allen Mitteln zu Fall zu bringen. - Heidelberger Antrittsvorlesung (12.5.1965) des am 2.2.1967 verstorbenen Altphilologen Dr. Gustav Grossmann. Das von Prof. Michael Landmann (Berlin) der Redaktion empfohlene Manuskript wurde von Frau Elisabeth Grossmann durchgesehen, stilistisch bereinigt und in Verbindung mit Prof. Ernst A.
