Both groups rejected prewar conventions, deeply influencing later conceptual and performance art. Yayoi KUSAMA shared their avant-garde visions and took part in many of their exhibitions. GUTAI Art Association (Japan) was founded in 1954 in the Osaka-Kobe region by Jirō Yoshihara, Gutai was an influential collective of Japanese artists known for experimental, action-based works. Artists were instructed to "never imitate others" and to allow the human spirit and raw physical materials to "shake hands" without dominating one another. Famous for interactive, large-scale installations, live performances, and unconventional methods, such as painting with feet or launching paint from cannons. ZERO (Germany) was founded in the late 1950s in Düsseldorf by Heinz Mack and Otto Piene.
