Da liegt es nahe, sich zu fragen, was in Rom auf all die Unzähligen so anziehend wir…kt. Was für eine Bedeutung hat die Ewige Stadt für uns? Rom ist in der Tat ein historisches Phänomen von so gewaltigen Ausmaßen, daß wir daran einfach nicht vorbeigehen können; ja, wir dürfen vielleicht sogar sagen, daß keine andere Stadt für die Geschichte des Abendlandes so bedeutungsvoll geworden ist wie gerade Rom. Die Ewige Stadt hat auf den Gebieten der Kultur, der Kunst, des Rechtes und der Staatsform so unendlich viel Unvergängliches hervorgebracht, daß jede Generation immer wieder neu zum Geist dieser einzigartigen Metropole Stellung nehmen muß. Aber sie soll uns nicht nur ein Dogma, sondern ein Problem sein. Wir dürfen nicht nur kritiklos bewundern, sondern müssen auch die offenbaren Schwächen kennenlernen. Die Stadt, die gewohnt war, alle ihre Gedanken und die ihr gestellten Probleme bis zur letzten Konsequenz durchzudenken und mit seiner Beharrlichkeit durch alle Jahrhunderte hindurch an ihnen festzualten, hat auch den Denkmäler der Kunst dem Stempel ihrer Eigenart aufgeprägt. Der namenhafte Kunsthistorier Samuel Guyer hat es verstanden, in anregender und zwangsloser Weise zu zeigen, wie die Seele Roms Denkmäler der Kunst beeinflußt und in ihnen Gestalt angenommen hat. Der reiche Bildteil trägt seinerseits Wesentliches zur Anschaulichkeit und Lebendigkeit des außergewöhnlichen Werkes bei. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 860.
