La « Théogonie » est le chant qu'élève en l'honneur des dieux Immortels un poète béotien inspiré par les Muses. Dans ce poème d'époque archaïque, Hésiode célèbre l'ordre divin du monde en racontant la formation de l'univers, la succession des générations divines et la répartition des honneurs parmi les dieux. L'histoire de la famille divine aboutit ainsi à la mise en place de l'ordre éternel de Zeus. Naissances, unions, conflits, alliances et combats dessinent une carte des puissances divines actives dans le monde. Ce processus théogonique attribue à chaque élément du cosmos, aux dieux immortels ainsi qu'aux hommes mortels, les prérogatives et la place qui leur reviennent. Le poème d'Hésiode n'est pas seulement un chef-d'uvre de la littérature antique. Il met véritablement en scène les puissances divines qu'un homme grec pouvait percevoir à l'uvre dans l'univers.
