(pen and ink drawings) INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author/poet in the upper left corner of the front endpaper: "To Charley King, just / because I like him. / Elwood / Los Angeles / Dec. 1925." Short (one-page) verses, in commemoration all the major holidays (well, the Christian ones, anyway) -- "That we may remember our National Holidays are more than mere names." Covered are: New Year; Lincoln's Birthday; Washington's Birthday (yes, these great men weren't always forced to share a single holiday); Good Friday; Easter; Arbor Day; Memorial Day; Independence Day; Labor Day; Armistice Day; Thanksgiving; and Christmas. The poetry is pretty hokey, but the illustrations are quite lovely. The illustrator, Albert Hurter, was later (1931) hired by the Walt Disney Studio as its first "inspirational sketch artist," and from then until his death in 1942 he had a significant influence on the look of the studio's animated shorts and features, in particular SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS and PINCOCCHIO.
