Amazing Stories, Volume 1, Number 12. Edited by Hugo Gernsback. In acceptable / reading-copy condition. Original printed front and back wrappers (Frank R. Paul cover art) are missing. A previous owner has supplied a plain peach paper wrapper hand-lettered in blue pencil "Amazing / March 1927" with "10c" stamped in the upper right corner (used-bookstore marking); the narrow spine strip of the original printed cover showing "Amazing Stories / Scientifiction / 1927" has been preserved and glued along the spine edge of the improvised wrapper. The improvised wrapper was glued directly to page 1081; when the glue shifted, it lifted a section of the advertisement text on that page, leaving a visibly stripped/blotted area in the left column. Page 1081 remains fully legible otherwise. Pages are heavily tanned and brittle with light chipping and edge tears, but all are present and attached; text is unmarked. A reading copy only. Condizione: Good. - Quarto, 11-1/8 inches high by 7-7/8 inches wide. Softcover, bound in color pictorial wraps with Howard Brown's illustration of tramways equipped with devices by which "Electric Arcs Melt Snow and Ice". The covers are creased and soiled. Once bound in with other issues, the periodical has been removed with stab marks evident and large portions of the spine having perished and thus lacking. [104] pages in all, consisting of pages 945 through 1048, profusely illustrated throughout. Good. In addition to scientific articles this issue includes the science fiction short story titled "Elixir of Life" by H.L Johnstone. The story is illustrated by Frank R. Paul who had a strong background as a technical illustrator and also contributed cover illustrations for the "Amazing Stories" pulp periodical. In addition, the page facing Johnstone's story is illustrated with vignettes portraying and describing scenes from "Mystical Movies".…

Albeit originally saddle-stapled, the two staples have been removed. Still, the slightly age-tanned, extensively illustrated contents (48 pp.) appear clean and complete. There is a three-inch tear from the bottom along the spine seam of the first and last interior pages. The predominantly yellow and red wrapper has a penned name at the top in the front, a rubbed spine edge, a small stain in the lower corner in the front, and some handling creases/surface rubbing.
