Louis Raemaekersâ Cartoons: With Accompanying Notes by Well-Known English Writers (1916) is a collection of political cartoons from the early 20th century. The book features 304 pages of illustrations by Louis Raemaekers, a Dutch-born artist renowned for his stark depictions of the horrors of World War I, interspersed with explanatory notes and commentary from prominent English writers. Each cartoon is reproduced in a full-page format in color, and is paired with a descriptive note, often written by figures such as Francis Slopford, Eden Phillpotts, Hilaire Belloc, G.K. Chesterton, Herbert Warren, John Buchan, Hilaire Belloc, The Dean of St. Paul's, and many others. The work is a direct response to the events of the first World War, 1914â"1918, and reflects the anti-German sentiment and moral outrage prevalent in Britain at the time. The volume includes an appreciation from H. H. Asquith, then Prime Minister of England, praising Raemaekersâ ability to convey the suffering of war and his role in raising public awareness of its horrors. Raemaekers gained prominence through his work in the Telegraaf in Amsterdam, where his anti-German cartoons were widely circulated. His reception in England was both celebrated and controversial, as German authorities feared his influence. The binding is gone entirely, but the text block is tight and square, missing only the final leaf (page 305). All of the other finely reproduced full-page illustrations and text are present and in very good condition. A large (folio), heavy (five pounds) book - additional shipping charges may apply, particularly for expedited or international shipment. Binding copy. FAIR. Cartoon. Color Plates. Folio 13" - 23" tall. 304 pages. Illustrated by Louis Raemaekers (illustratore).…
