Having served his apprenticeship in sail, Oram joined the Royal Navy in 1913. He saw service in Orion and destroyers Earnest and Obdurate and was present at J…utland. After transferring to submarines he joined V4 as First Lieutenant, before moving to the steam submarine K7 wherehe witnessed the saga known as the "Battle of May Island" in the Forth Estuary in which the submarines K17 and K4 were sunk.
